John Tortorella Fined $20,000 For Comments About Pittsburgh Penguins

John Tortorella was fined $20,000 by the NHL late Friday for comments he made to the media following Thursday night's game between his New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The money will be donated to the NHL Foundation, the league's charitable arm.

Tortorella's comments came after New York's 5-2 loss to the Pens. In the game, Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik delivered a knee-on-knee hit to Rangers forward Derek Stepan, and Torts was heated when asked about the hit afterward.

It’s a cheap, dirty hit. I wonder what would happen if we did it to one of their two whining stars over there. I wonder what would happen. So I’m anxious to see what happens with the league on this. Just no respect amongst players. None. It’s sickening. ... Ask the guy who did it. Ask him. That’s one of the most arrogant organization’s in the league. They whine about this stuff all the time and look what happened.

Orpik will not face supplemental discipline for the hit, and there’s no word Friday with regards to Stepan’s status going forward. He did not return to the game on Thursday night.
