The Ottawa Senators named assistant coach Luke Richardson the head coach of their AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, on Wednesday afternoon. Richardson's two-year deal with the organization will keep him in charge of Senators AHL prospects through the 2013-14 season.
Luke Richardson Named Head Coach Of AHL’s Binghamton Senators
Luke Richardson has been named the head coach of the AHL’s Binghamton Senators.
He'll be joined by assistant coach Steve Sterling, the former head coach of the New York Islanders. Sterling has served as an AHL head coach in Norfolk, Va., Springfield, Mass. and Bridgeport, Conn. as well. Most recently, Sterling was the head coach of the Iserlohn Rooster's in Germany's top league, the DEL.
Former video coach Matt Meachem also returns to the Binghamton bench with five years of experience with the franchise under his belt. He was originally hired for the position in 2008 after serving one year as a video coaching intern.
Richardson has never held a head coaching gig before, but he’s been an assistant in the NHL with the Senators since the end of the 2008-09 season when he retired as a player. The 43-year-old played 20 years in the NHL with Ottawa, Toronto, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Columbus and Edmonton.
