Claude Giroux Faces Possible Suspension For Dainius Zubrus Hit

Claude Giroux could be suspended for his hit on Devils forward Dainius Zubrus.

Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux faced a disciplinary hearing on Monday morning with the NHL's Department of Player Safety for his second period hit on Devils forward Dainius Zubrus in Game 4 between the clubs Sunday night.

Giroux’s hit at the 19:56 mark of the second was a direct blow from the blindside to Zubrus’ head. He was given a two minute minor penalty for head contact, a penalty that includes no stipulation for a major penalty or a game misconduct but does leave the possibility of separate supplementary discipline.

It's expected that a decision will be handed down by Brendan Shanahan and the league office at some point on Monday. While guessing their decision is virtually impossible, Giroux has quite a bit working in his favor: He's a star player, and the NHL has seemingly been reluctant to ban star players in other decisions in these playoffs. Giroux doesn't have a history as a dirty player, and perhaps most importantly, Zubrus was not injured on the play and remained in the game.
