Mike Haviland has been on the coaching staff of the Chicago Blackhawks for four years, but no longer. The team fired their assistant coach on Tuesday evening, and they've called a 7 p.m. ET press conference with head coach Joel Quenneville in addition to the news.
Chicago Blackhawks Fire Assistant Coach Mike Haviland
Chicago Blackhawks assistant coach Mike Haviland has been fired.
There's been speculation that Quenneville could be interested in taking the head coaching job with the Montreal Canadiens under new general manager Marc Bergevin, a former member of the Chicago front office. There's also the conventional wisdom that Quenneville does not always see eye to eye with general manager Stan Bowman.
We’ll see if anything interesting comes out of the press conference on the Quenneville front, and if it’s at all related to Haviland’s departure. Haviland has been a member of the Chicago organization since taking the head-coaching job with their AHL affiliate in Norfolk in 2005. He moved to Rockford, Ill., when the team changed affiliates in 2007, and he made the leap to the NHL in 2008. Haviland was on the bench when Chicago won the Stanley Cup in 2010.
