Devils Vs. Flyers, Game 5 Score: Physical Play Defines Period 2

PHILADELPHIA -- There were no goals in the second period of play, but that doesn't mean there wasn't any excitement. Physical play dominated the middle frame of Game 5 between the Devils and Flyers.

Philadelphia has definitely dictated that portion of this game, and at times in Period 2, they went over the line just a bit. Zac Rinaldo was penalized for interference on a hit at the 12:47 mark after he stuck his hip out while Dainius Zubrus was skating around the net.

The puck was nowhere to be found, a clear interference call. Philadelphia killed the penalty rather successfully while also killing off a penalty on what appeared to be a phantom high-sticking call against Scott Hartnell. One call that wasn't made: a potential boarding call on Wayne Simmonds for a hit on Marek Zidlicky. Zidlicky dropped quickly to his knees as Simmonds delivered a body check, and the head of the Devils defenseman collided with the glass.

The Devils put a lot of shots on goal and hit several posts in the period, and Ilya Bryzgalov was solid in goal for the Flyers as well. Martin Brodeur has looked shaky at the other end, such as on a play where he overcommitted and the Flyers put the puck off the post with an empty net.

If Philly can put some pucks on net and generate some zone time, this game is far from over. But they’ve still yet to be able to do so for extended periods of time, and they’re facing the final 20 minutes of their season if they can’t figure things out.
