Tuukka Rask will be the starting goaltender for the Boston Bruins in 2012-13 after signing a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the club Thursday, according to TSN. The goalie was set to be a restricted free agent on July 1.
Tuukka Rask Signs 1-Year Deal With Boston Bruins
The Boston Bruins signed Tuukka Rask to a one-year, $3.5 million contract Thursday.
Rask, 25, has the starting gig locked up in Boston now that it's guaranteed he'll be back for another season. Starting goaltender Tim Thomas walked out on the team earlier this offseason, saying he plans on taking a season off from the game of hockey. That move has the potential to hurt the Bruins financially, but with Rask in position behind Thomas on the depth chart, the B's aren't in bad shape at all when it comes to the goaltending position.
Rask took the starting job from Thomas in 2009-10 and seemed destined to run with it, playing 45 regular season games and 13 playoff games, but Thomas rebounded in 2010-11, putting together one of the best statistical seasons ever seen by a goaltender. The Bruins won the Stanley Cup that season and Thomas ran away with both the Conn Smythe and Vezina Trophies.
Rask’s previous deal, a two-year contract signed in 2010, came with a cap hit of $1.25 million per year.
