Kings Vs. Devils, 2012 Stanley Cup Finals Game 3: Scoreless After First Period

The New Jersey Devils have had plenty of trouble scoring on the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Finals at home. After a frustrating first period against Jonathan Quick and the Kings defense, the Devils could be forgiven for praying for a breakthrough, despite remaining tied at 0-0 in Los Angeles.

That’s because the Devils had chances in the first 20 minutes of play: two Kings penalties gave the Devils 4-on-4, 5-on-4, and 5-on-3 situations late in the period, but none of their seven shots in the period got by Quick, and 10 more missed. Los Angeles’ defense stepped up on the penalty kill, stifling New Jersey despite the man advantage.

The good news for the Devils is that the Kings' own troubles with putting the puck in the net didn't let up, either. Los Angeles had six shots in the first period, all saved by Martin Brodeur.
