Jonas Gustavsson will be Jimmy Howard's backup in Detroit. The Red Wings signed the former Maple Leafs goaltender to a two-year, $3 million contract on Sunday soon after the opening of free agency. The news was first reported by Sportsnet and was confirmed quickly thereafter by multiple sources.

Gustavsson's rights were traded to the Winnipeg Jets by the Leafs at the NHL Draft last week, but the sides did not agree to terms on a deal. As a result, the seventh-round pick sent to Toronto in the deal comes back to Winnipeg.
Gustavsson hasn’t had a ton of success since coming to North America in 2009. His cumulative save percentage in 107 career NHL games is just a meager .900, but the hope for the Red Wings is that Gustavsson’s talent can come out on a team with a better defensive unit in front of him.
