The Philadelphia Flyers took care of some business on Wednesday, re-signing forward Wayne Simmonds to a 6-year contract extension, according to Bob McKenzie.

The Philadelphia Flyers reached an agreement on Wednesday with Wayne Simmonds on a 6-year extension.

The exact terms of the deal aren’t known yet, but McKenzie has been hearing it is somewhere in the neighborhood of $4 million per year.
Simmonds was brought over as part of the trade that saw Mike Richards leave town for the Los Angeles Kings. The 23-year-old had his best season in 2011-12, scoring 28 goals and netting 49 points.The right winger was especially valuable on the power play, scoring 11 goals.
One of the tougher forwards on the team, Simmonds was a key piece in leading the black and orange to a No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs and a first-round upset of the Pittsburgh Penguins. At 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, Simmonds can mix it up and position himself in front to create havoc for opposing goaltenders.
After losing Jaromir Jagr to the Dallas Stars and Matt Carle to the Tampa Bay Lightning, general manager Paul Holmgren was under the gun to make a positive move this offseason. He's done that in a big way with the securing of Simmonds, who now is a cornerstone this team will continue build around.
