The NHL is in danger of yet another lockout, but the AHL is prepared to keep going as planned, and could serve as a haven for younger NHL talent without a place to play.

    The lockout continues to be a stalemate, as the NHL and the NHLPA avoid the HRR discussion like Lindsay Lohan avoids rehab. Puck heads around the world are mourning the loss of the first two weeks of the NHL season. Fans are in need of a hockey fix and the AHL is more than happy to oblige.

    The American Hockey League kicked off it’s season this weekend with the most talented group of minor leaguers seen since, well, the last lockout. On the docket for Sunday, Oct. 13 are six games featuring some of the NHL’s current and future stars.

    AHL Schedule Released: League’s 77th Season Begins October 12

    The 2012-13 American Hockey League schedule was released on Friday. The regular season gets underway on Oct. 12 with seven games, and that’s where the Norfolk Admirals’ defense of their Calder Cup championship begins.

    Among the highlights on the slate: a pair of outdoor games. The first of those will take place at Comerica Park in Detroit.

    Just eight years after the NHL lost its 2004-05 season, the NHL is in danger of yet another labor dispute. That’s bad news for NHL fans, but possibly the best thing that could happen for the minor-league AHL, who might see an influx of younger NHL players looking for ice time. The 30-team league releases its schedule today.

    The AHL saw major attendance boosts across the board in 2004-05 without the NHL operating as players such as Jason Spezza - who won the league scoring title and MVP award - flocked to the league. Obviously, nobody wants a lockout - especially not fringe minor-league players - but the AHL is more than prepared to step in should the highest tier of hockey not start as scheduled.
