Jordan Eberle is expected to agree on a contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers in the next day, according to SportsNet. The deal should be like that of teammate Taylor Hall's, who recently signed a seven-year, $42 million extension with the team.
Jordan Eberle Contract Extension With Oilers Coming Soon, Says Report
Eberle’s camp and Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini will continue negotiations over the next 24 hours, as there are a few kinks to be worked out.
Per SportsNet:
Though it is Tambellini’s wish to have Hall and Eberle set the salary cap at $6 million per season - setting an artificial salary cap in Edmonton the way the Sedin twins do at $6.1 million in Vancouver - the Eberle camp may not be as willing to sign an identical deal to Hall’s.
Chances are the Eberle camp would accept an AAV of $6 million per season, matching Hall, but will negotiate a shorter-term contract by a year or two than Hall’s seven-year deal.
Like Hall, Eberle is eyeing the end of his first contract that will expire after the 2012-13 season. With the NHL and its players currently stuck in a reassessment of the current collective bargaining agreement, the contract would be beneficial for Eberle since reports indicate that a new CBA would limit contracts to five years at maximum.
The 22-year-old Eberle had 34 goals and 42 assists while playing in 78 games during the 2011-12 season.
