Brian Burke said he was stunned by the Toronto Maple Leafs decision to fire him and made his first public comments since the announcement.

Burke was en route to the airport on Wednesday morning when he received a phone call from Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment chief operating officer Tom Anselmi. Burke was told to come to the team’s offices at Air Canada Centre, where he was informed of the organization’s decision.
Despite initial shock, Burke stateed that he is doing OK:
”I was floored, and I still am stunned. I’ve never been fired before. How am I doing? I’m doing OK.
“I’m so grateful I had a chance to run the crown jewel franchise of the NHL. I’m grateful to have been given the chance to live in Toronto. I love this city and I am grateful for the support of the fans.”
Unfortunately, it appears someone does not fully support Burke as the rear window of one of his cars was smashed. However, nothing appeared to be stolen.
During the team’s press conference, it was announced that Burke would be retained as a team consultant, which many were quick to label as a title without any responsibility.
Apparently, Burke is the one who suggested that he act in such a role when meeting with ownership. Based on his comments on Friday, it appears he intends to help new general manager Dave Nonis in any capacity that he can.
According to Michael Grange of Sportsnet, a full conference will take place with Burke at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday.
