The Oilers and the city of Edmonton have made progress on a new arena deal that would lead to the construction of a new home in the downtown area, according to a report by Marty Klinkenberg of the Edmonton Journal on Monday morning.

The Oilers and the city of Edmonton reportedly made progress in negotiations on a new arena deal for the downtown area.

Klinkenberg reports that Oilers owner Daryl Katz, Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel, city manager Simon Farbrother and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman met on Friday in an attempt to work out the details on a final deal.
City councilor Bryan Anderson told Klinkenberg on Sunday that the meeting was positive and that Farbrother would present the details in public on Wednesday. At that time the council will decide if the deal is adequate enough to accept.
On Monday, Mayor Mandel stated in an interview on CBC radio that the administration had plenty of work to do and referenced the council being presented the details on Wednesday.
According to Anderson, the mayor told the Katz Group that if things didn’t get done soon that negotiations would not be able to continue until January 2014.
