Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul suffered a broken forearm in the team's 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night, according to head coach Randy Carlyle.

The injury occurred during the second period when it appeared as though a point shot from Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf hit Lupul in the arm while attempting to set a screen in front of the Pittsburgh goal. Lupul immediately left the ice surface and headed to the Toronto locker room. He did not return to the game.

As of Thursday morning, the Maple Leafs have yet to release a timeline for a potential return. However, it is likely that Lupul will miss a significant chunk of time, especially considering the condensed nature of this season’s schedule.

The injury comes just days removed from Lupul signing a five-year, $26.25 million extension with the Maple Leafs.

With Lupul suffering several significant injuries throughout his career, this latest occurrence has already started debate about the new deal.
