Matt Niskanen injury: Penguins defenseman out 2-4 weeks

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen will miss two to four weeks with a lower-body injury.

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen will miss two to four weeks due to a lower-body injury, according to head coach Dan Bylsma on Tuesday afternoon.

Niskanen appeared to suffer the injury during Sunday's victory against the Ottawa Senators. After falling legs first into the boards during the first period, Niskanen left the game and was unable to return. With the Penguins having an off-day on Monday, no updates surfaced.

Tuesday’s vague announcement of a lower-body injury is to be expected, as was noted by SB Nation’s Penguins blog, PensBurgh:

Dan Bylsma may speak to Niskanen’s condition later on today, but in true NHL fashion, his leg could be hanging by a strand and he’d probably be considered “day-to-day.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, the lineup for that night was going to be a game-time decision.

Bylsma will need to determine how he wants to utilize his defensemen, specifically in the cases of Ben Lovejoy and Simon Despres.
