The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Brian Strait to a three-year extension, according to an announcement on the team's official website on Thursday afternoon.

The New York Islanders have come to terms on a three-year extension with defenseman Brian Strait.

Strait was acquired by the Islanders on Jan. 18 via waivers by way of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The 25-year-old defenseman is playing on a one-year, $650,000 contract and woud have been a restricted free agent at the conclusion of this season. As of Thursday afternoon, the terms on the contract have not been released.
Originally chosen with the No. 65 overall selection by the Penguins in the 2006 NHL Draft, Strait spent three seasons playing at Boston University before signing an entry-level contract with Pittsburgh.
Having played in 220 career American Hockey League games with the Penguins’ affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Strait accumulated eight goals and 32 assists for a total of 40 points.
Having only played in 12 games in the NHL prior to this year, Strait has played in all six of the Islanders’ games this season.
