P.K. Subban rumors: Agent to speak with Canadiens on Monday

Restricted free agent P.K. Subban will be meeting with his agent on Monday afternoon. He is hopeful to sign a new contract with the Montreal Canadiens prior to the start of the season.

With the NHL lockout seemingly coming to a close, the league’s 30 teams will look to get back to business as quickly as possible.

For some teams that means scheduling physicals, organizing training camps or evaluating roster depth. For the Montreal Canadiens, that means signing restricted free agent defenseman P.K. Subban.

Considered by many as one of the game’s best young defenseman, Subban enters the post-lockout NHL without a contract for what will be a condensed 2013 regular season. With training camps largely expected to open this weekend and the season expected to start the weekend after that, time is a factor for the Canadiens and the 23-year-old blue liner.

In a report published by Dave Stubbs in the Montreal Gazette, it was reported that Subban will be meeting with his agent Don Meehan in Toronto on Monday. After discussing the situation, Meehan will then call team general manager Marc Bergevin to begin discussions.

While Subban states that he wants to remain in Montreal, he understands that any thing can happen:

“That’s because as much as people may believe I’ll be back this season with the Canadiens, it’s still dependent on whether we can reach an agreement. Whether I’m positive about reaching an agreement or not, there’s always a chance it may not get to that.”

If the two sides can not agree on a deal, there will certainly be plenty of teams interested in trading for Subban’s services.

Of course, any new deal will have to be signed after the new collective bargaining agreement is ratified, which is expected to occur later this week.

Subban was originally chosen with the No. 43 overall selection in the 2007 NHL Draft by the Canadiens. In 160 regular season games, he has registered 21 goals and 55 assists for 76 points.
