The 15-year career of Tomas Holmstrom will be coming to an end as the 40-year-old is expected to announce his retirement prior to the start of the season.

Tomas Holmstrom is expected to retire after 15-seasons in the NHL. An official announcement is expected to come prior to the start of the season.

Originally selected with the No. 257 overall pick in the 1994 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, Holmstrom spent the entirety of his career wearing the winged wheel on his chest. One of only five members of the franchise to be on all four of the Red Wings' most recent Stanley Cup teams, Holmstrom played in 1,026 regular season games and recorded 243 goals in addition to 287 assists for 530 total points over that span.
During the early months of the offseason, Holmstrom had expressed an interest in playing a 16th season.
However, additions by the team in players such as Mikael Samuelsson, Jordin Tootoo and Damien Brunner proved that the aging Holmstrom might not have a place on the roster any more.
Expressing a desire to only play for the Red Wings, Holmstrom apparently informed the team of his decision to retire during the course of the lockout. The team did not want to make the announcement during the work stoppage.
It is believed that the organization will hold a press conference to officially make the announcement prior to the start of the season.
