The Washington Capitals confirmed on Wednesday that forward Nicklas Backstrom will be visiting a specialist in Michigan to examine his neck.

Nicklas Backstrom and his agent have informed the Washington Capitals that Backstrom will be visiting a specialist in Michigan to examine his neck. His status for training camp is unknown as of this time.

Backstrom’s status for the start of training camp is unknown due to the injury, which he sustained while playing in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League. With the new collective bargaining agreement yet to be ratified, NHL teams are not permitted to interact with players until the start of training camp.
This has left the organization without any knowledge of the extent of Backstrom’s injury.
Originally diagnosed as a minor injury by a doctor in Russia, Backstrom’s agent later projected that his status might be decided on a week-to-week basis.
With a condensed 48-game schedule expected to start next weekend, an organization’s depth will likely be a key component to its success in the standings. In Washington’s case, a healthy Backstrom undoubtedly makes the Capitals a contending team.
With that in mind, the organization was pleased with his decision to proactively approach his injury, via Russian Machine Never Breaks:
Nick and his agent informed us that they are being proactive with his injury and decided to visit a specialist prior to training camp. Obviously, as you know until camp officially starts teams cannot perform physicals on any player.
The new CBA is expected to be ratified by Saturday, with training camps starting on Sunday.
