Penguins injuries: Kris Letang, Tomas Vokoun start year on shelf

Kris Letang and Tomas Vokoun will start the year on injured reserve.

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tomas Vokoun has been cleared for "light workouts" and will undergo more tests later this week, according to coach Dan Bylsma on Tuesday afternoon.

Vokoun dealt with a situation where blood clots formed in his leg, which required immediate medical attention. The extent of the situation has yet to fully develop, but the seriousness of it has been evident from the start. A foreign report surfaced last week that raised questions about Vokoun’s future in the league. However, his agent, Allan Walsh, denied the accuracy of the quotes attributed to Vokoun.

Fortunately, Vokoun was seen walking around the facility, which is a positive sign all things considered.

Goaltending is considered one of the few weak points for Pittsburgh, and Vokoun is considered the safety net for starter Marc-Andre Fleury. His ability to contribute this season could be a crucial component to the team’s success. He will start the year on injured reserve.

In addition to Vokoun, defenseman Kris Letang will also start the year on injured reserve, as he is battling a lower-body injury. Bylsma stated that Letang's injury is not believed to be a long-term issue and that the player will be eligible to return to the starting lineup as soon as Oct. 8.
