Luke Gazdic scores on first shot of first NHL game

Edmonton Oilers tough guy Luke Gazdic had quite an NHL debut, scoring on the first shot of his first NHL game.

For one night, Edmonton Oilers forward Luke Gazdic can say that he has something in common with Mario Lemieux.

Just as the Hockey Hall of Famer did back in 1984 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Gazdic opened his NHL career by scoring on the first shot, of the first shift, of his first NHL game, getting his stick on the puck as it deflected past Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec.

Gazdic, known more for his toughness than his skill throughout his career in the minor leagues, was claimed on waivers by the Oilers just before the start of the season as they tried to add some toughness to their lineup.

He immediately made his presence felt. It just wasn’t the way the Oilers were expecting.
