The Tampa Bay Lightning completely obliterated their in-state rivals on Thursday night, picking up a 7-2 win over the Florida Panthers.
Steven Stamkos hat trick: 3 goals, 3 different ways
Steven Stamkos scored an even-strength goal, a power play goal, and a shorthanded goal in Tampa Bay’s 7-2 win on Thursday night.
It was quite a clinic in domination and included yet another hat trick from Steven Stamkos, the sixth of his career, to account for his first three goals of the 2013-14 season.
What was a little different about this hat trick for Stamkos is that he did it by scoring three goals, three different ways, netting a shorthanded goal in the first period, an even-strength goal in the second period, and then completing the trick with a power play goal at the 12:25 mark of the third period.
The third goal was a vintage Stamkos goal, blasting a one-timer from the top of the circle.
It's a pretty rare accomplishment, though not entirely unheard of. Since 1987-88 there have been 96 other hat tricks accomplished the same way. It's happened just 11 times since the start of the 2009-10 season, with Henrik Zetterberg being the last player to do it on Feb. 1, 2013 against the St. Louis Blues.
