Jordan Staal is having some problems offensively, whiffs on breakaway

Jordan Staal had a chance to score his first goal of the season on Thursday night, and then whiffed on the breakaway.

Jordan Staal is one of the best defensive forwards in hockey and has been for quite some time. He's also counting $6 million per year against the Carolina Hurricanes' salary cap, and that sort of salary always carries an expectation for the player to also score some goals.

Staal has always put up solid point totals, especially given the type of tough minutes he plays on a nightly basis, but has never really been a go-to-guy offensively. That has been very true in the early part of the 2013-14 season as Staal has recorded just one assist in his first seven games.

He had a prime opportunity to get his first goal of the season on Thursday night against Toronto, and then this happened ...

It’s been that type of season for Staal, who has also had a couple of unlucky breaks, like this shot that refused to cross the goal line against Phoenix earlier this week.
