NHL Scores: Jets rally past Blues, Ducks extend streak to 6

The Winnipeg Jets used a pair of third period goals to rally past the St. Louis Blues and pick up a 4-3 shootout win.

It’s hard to understand what the NHL was thinking with its early season schedule, but there were only two games on Friday night.

The bad news? That’s not anywhere near enough games. The good news? Both games were close, divisional matchups that required overtime.

In Winnipeg, Alex Steen scored a pair of goals for the St. Louis Blues playing in his home town, but that still wasn’t enough for the Blues as they watched the Winnipeg Jets storm back for a 4-3 shootout win.

In the late game, Anaheim received a late goal from Nick Bonino to force overtime against the Phoenix Coyotes. The Ducks would go on to win in the shootout to extend their winning streak to six games. Teemu Selanne scored his second goal of the season and also added one in the shootout.

1. How will Evander Kane perform?

Quite well. Kane logged more than 20 minutes of ice-time and recorded four shots on goal, including his fourth goal of the season to help kickstart Winnipeg’s third period rally. He’s the Jets’ best player and he came up big for them on Friday night when they needed him.

2. Will the Jets climb out of last place in the Central?

They did, and it was an impressive two points as they had to rally past one of the best teams in the Western Conference to earn the shootout. The only negative for the night was the injury suffered by rookie defenseman Jacob Trouba when he crashed into the boards while trying to chase down the puck in the first period.

3. Will the Blues keep pace with the Colorado Avalanche?

Well, the Blues gained a point, but it's probably not one they're happy with, seeing as how they let an extra one slip away. With less than 10 minutes to play in regulation it seemed like St. Louis was well on its way to victory until everything started to fall apart down the stretch. They gave up too many chances and it came back to bite them as Evander Kane and Tobias Enstrom scored late goals, and then Olli Jokinen netted the winner in the seventh round of the shootout.

4. Will the Anaheim Ducks extend their five-game winning streak?

The winning streak is now at six. The Ducks tied it late to force overtime and then won an extended shootout thanks to a goal from Jakob Silfverberg.

5. Will the Coyotes continue their four-game point streak?

Yes, but probably not the way they wanted to extend. Like the Blues, the Coyotes were just a couple of minutes away from picking up two points on the road until a late goal forced overtime and resulted in a shootout loss.

What is St. Louis going to do with Brian Elliott? Coming off of a dreadful 2012-13 season Elliott isn't off to a much better start this season and had plenty of issues on Friday during their 4-3 loss to the Jets, including a series of misplays on Winnipeg's first goal of the game.

With his two goals on Friday night Alex Steen is already up to seven goals and 11 points on the season. There are two teams in the league, Buffalo and Philadelphia, that have only scored 11 goals all season. He is also now just one goal away from matching his total (eight) from last season in 40 games. So, yeah, he’s off to a pretty good start this season.
