Even though he was coming off one of the worst seasons of his otherwise productive career, the Detroit Red Wings were still willing to throw big money at forward Stephen Weiss this past offseason in free agency, signing the forward to a five-year, $24.5 million contract.

Stephen Weiss scored his first goal with the Detroit Red Wings, netting the overtime winner against Carolina.

It took him just two games to score his first Red Wings goal when he tallied the overtime winner on Friday night to give Detroit a come-from-behind 3-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Red Wings trailed this game by two goals entering the third period but finally broke through with a Justin Abdelkader goal early in the frame.
Henrik Zetterberg tied it with just 17 seconds to play in regulation (thanks to an assist from Detroit's other big offseason addition, Daniel Alfredsson) to send it to overtime.
Weiss appeared in just 17 games for the Panthers last season and scored just one goal to go with three assists. It was a pretty obvious outlier in his career as he was usually good for 55-60 points in previous years. Provided he stays healthy there is no reason to believe he can't come close to that level again as a member of the Red Wings in 2013.
