NHL Scores: Sabres finally win at home; Lightning win without Stamkos

The Buffalo Sabres finally won a home game and the Tampa Bay Lightning managed to pick up a win in their first game without Steven Stamkos.

Bruce Bennett

For the first time this season the Buffalo Sabres won a game in front of their home fans, picking up a 3-2 shootout win over the Los Angeles Kings. It wasn't easy, and they needed Ryan Miller to be the best player on the ice, but the Sabres picked up their fourth win of the season and avoided what would have been an 0-9-1 start at home.

Elsewhere, the Lighting won their first game without Steven Stamkos, the Nashville Predators lost again but finally scored a goal, and the Florida Panthers upset the Anaheim Ducks.

Five Questions

On Tuesday we asked you five burning questions about the day’s games. These are your cool, soothing answers.
1. How will the Tampa Bay Lightning attempt to fill the void left bySteven Stamkos?

What did they do in their first game without their best player? They dominated Montreal on the road, earning a 2-1 shootout win. Don't let the final score fool you, this one was all Tampa Bay as they peppered Carey Price with 45 shots on goal and were constantly in their end of the ice all night. Ryan Malone scored Tampa Bay's only goal during regulation, while Ben Bishop stopped 28 of 29 shots in net for Tampa Bay.

2. Will Claude Giroux add to his goal total?

He did not, but he was close. As the final seconds ticked away in the second period Giroux fired a one-timer at what appeared to an empty net only to have Ottawa’s Craig Anderson make a sprawling stick save, taking away a sure goal. Giroux did add two assists in Philadelphia’s 5-0 win.

3. Will we have a goalie duel at The Garden?

At times, and it was Martin Brodeur’s doing. His shutout streak (two in a row) came to an end but he still stopped 33 of 35 shots to help lead the Devils to a 3-2 win. He’s allowed just four goals over his past five starts. This is some of the best hockey he’s played in years.

4. Will St. Louis extend its three-game win streak?

No. The Blues were on the losing end of a 3-2 overtime decision against the Phoenix Coyotes thanks to Oliver Ekman-Larsson's winner in the first minute of the extra period. The Coyotes continued their surprising start and improved to 13-4-2 on the season.

5. Will Colorado stay unbeaten on the road?

For the first time this season the Avalanche lost away from the Pepsi Center, falling to the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-1. It was a big night for Jordan Staal and Patrick Dwyer as they provided the offense. Both players have been a bit unlucky this season in the goal-scoring department but managed to come through at the right time.

Impact Moment

The one play or moment from Tuesday’s games that will be making headlines over the next couple of days.

The injury to Kings starting goaltender Jonathan Quick. He had to leave Tuesday’s game with less than two minutes to play in overtime and the team would only say after the game that he was “still being evaluated.” Obviously, if he has to miss any amount of time it would be a pretty big blow to the Kings. Ben Scrivens is a fine backup, and even though Quick’s performance has dropped off quite a bit over the past year he’s still their best goalie and one of the best in the league.

Stat of the Night

The Calgary Flames managed just six shots on goal through the first two periods of Tuesday's game against the San Jose Sharks, and finished with only 13. Because it's a crazy game at times they still managed to earn a point thanks to their 3-2 overtime loss. That's almost as crazy as Buffalo earning two points against Los Angeles despite being outshot 45-17. It's only the 28th time since 1987 that a team won a game while allowing 45 or more shots and generating fewer than 18.
