NHL standings: Man, is the East bad or what?

The best team in the East would fail to qualify for the Western playoffs, if it all began today.

You’ve probably heard about how bad the NHL’s Eastern Conference is compared to their Western friends, but maybe you haven’t quantified it. Maybe you haven’t realized just how bad the East is. Well, look at the standings this Tuesday morning and you’ll get a better idea.

Here’s the Western Conference playoff picture as it currently stands:

The worst team in the Western playoffs, if they were to start today, would be the Colorado Avalanche. They have a 14-5-0 record, are 8-3-0 at home. They aren't a bad team.

Meanwhile, in the East ....

The best team in the Eastern Conference is Tampa Bay, also with 28 points. In a theoretical tiebreaker with the Avalanche, the Lightning would fall short as they've played one more game than Colorado. That's right -- the best team in the Eastern Conference wouldn't even qualify for the Western playoffs, if they were to begin today.
