With their team stuck at the bottom of the Western Conference standings and on their way to a fifth consecutive season on the outside of the playoffs, the Calgary Flames decided to make a change in the front office.

The team announced on Thursday that general manager Jay Feaster and assistant general manager John Weisbrod have been relieved of their duties, effective immediately.

Brian Burke, currently the president of hockey operations in Calgary, will look for his own general manager. Burke previously served as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs until he was fired coming out of the lockout last season. He’ll serve as interim GM in Calgary until a new guy can be found to take over.

Feaster was originally hired by the Flames to serve as assistant general manager under Darry Sutter in 2010 but took over the general manager duties in December, 2010 when Sutter resigned.

The Flames currently have an 11-15-4 record which has them in 14th place in the Western Conference, just two points ahead of the Edmonton Oilers. They are 14 points out of a playoff spot.

Prior to working for the Flames, Feaster was the general manager in Tampa Bay and was named the NHL’s executive of the year in 2003-04 when the franchise won its only Stanley Cup.
