Minor league hockey teams are known for inventive and fun promotional events like the Teddy Bear toss. But the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL added a twist to the tradition this week when they put a GoPro video camera on referee David Banfield’s helmet during a game against the Rockford IceHogs.

An ice-level view of thousands of Teddy Bears raining from the rafters! It’s as awesome as you’d expect.
A few observations:
- Not sure if I should have expected this or not, but listening to Banfield educate players about the rules instead of outright yelling at them was a great aspect. You can tell the players have respect for the crew.
- Banfield really turns up the sarcasm when he's scolding players. "Push him into your own goalie? Smart move!"
- Linesman Paul Carnathan's story about how the refs waved off a goal during a previous Teddy Bear toss was delightful.
- So was Banfield yelling at troublesome Checkers forward Chris Terry when he noticed him fooling around near the opposing goalie.
- Two fights, a video review and a Teddy Bear toss. The Checkers couldn't have timed this stunt more perfectly.
- "This could get (expletive) stupid!"
