Brooks Laich injury: Capitals forward will return from injury this week

Washington sent down Casey Wellman to the AHL to make room.

The surging Washington Capitals will get some extra offensive firepower soon, as Brooks Laich is eligible to return to the lineup on Monday after recovering from a groin injury.

Washington re-assigned forward Casey Wellman to the Hershey Bears of the AHL on Sunday to make room for Laich.

Laich began skating early last week after spending most of the last month on injured reserve. Laich’s groin issues have bothered him since last season, when he underwent abdominal surgery and played in only nine games. The injury was re-aggravated in November, when Laich said team doctors finally discovered the cause (via the Washington Post’s Katie Carrera):
“It looks like the problem was maybe coming more from my back which was hard because I’ve never had any back pain and we’ve tried some stuff with the back that’s really got me back on the ice and I’m really excited about.”

Laich has just six points in 25 games this year, but he was consistently putting up 40-point seasons before the injury occurred last season.
