The World Junior Championship hasn’t even begun, yet it’s already filled with controversy after Canada defenseman Matthew Dumba was ejected Sunday for a knee-on-knee hit on Sweden forward Erik Karlsson.

With Sweden up 2-0 in the second period and pressing for more offense, Dumba stepped up and delivered a blatant knee on Karlsson at the blueline.

Karlsson, a Carolina Hurricanes draft pick in 2012, was shaken up on the play. Dumba, a Minnesota Wild prospect, earned a match penalty and hit the dressing room early. The International Ice Hockey Federation could end up suspending Dumba for the play, which would leave Canada thin on the blueline with Griffin Reinhart already suspended for the first two games of the tournament.
Canada opens the WJC against Germany on Dec. 26.
