Since before the announcement became official that the Washington Capitals would host the 2015 Winter Classic, many speculated that Nationals Park, the home of Major League Baseball's Washington Nationals, would be the site of next year's outdoor centerpiece.
Winter Classic 2015: Nationals Park likely spot for next outdoor centerpiece
While a decision has yet to be made, it’s likely that Nationals Park will be the site of the next Winter Classic.
While the location has yet to be confirmed, it appears as though Nationals Park is the frontrunner.
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN and Chris Johnston of Sportsnet both tweeted on Monday afternoon that Nationals Park was the most likely venue for the 2015 Winter Classic:
Still not 100 percent but more than likely Winter Classic game in D.C. next year to be played at Nationals' ball park...
— Pierre LeBrun (@Real_ESPNLeBrun) December 30, 2013 NHL officials recently scouted three venues in the Washington area. Nationals Ballpark is most likely to host 2015 Winter Classic.
— Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) December 30, 2013 Short of the Capitals involvement, nothing has been determined in terms of an opponent or venue. Some speculation included potentially playing the contest in Baltimore at MT&T Stadium, as many viewed Washington’s RFK Stadium as an unlikely spot.
A report broke last week that the Philadelphia Flyers were going to be the opponents in the contest, but the NHL denied that a second team had been chosen yet. In the event that Philadelphia is selected, it would provide a larger base for ticket sales, as Philadelphia fans often travel south to attend baseball games between the Nationals and Phillies.
