Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane has been a lightning rod for media attention during his time in Winnipeg. More often than not, it has been of the negative nature.
Evander Kane on negative perception: ‘A good portion of it is because I’m black’
Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane believes the negative attention he receives is racially motivated.

In the upcoming print edition of The Hockey News Magazine (due out on March 4), Kane states in an interview with Ken Campbell that the perception of him is shaped by the color of his skin, via the twitter feed of The Hockey News’ Editor in Chief Jason Kay:
“I think a good portion of it is because I’m black and I’m not afraid to say that. I don’t feel like a victim and I don’t want to be perceived as one.”
Kane isn’t the only one to think so.
During the lockout, members of the Winnipeg media criticized a picture Kane took in Las Vegas where he was standing on a balcony with a giant stack of money -- the “money phone” picture. This prompted SB Nation’s Jets blog, Arctic Ice Hockey, to come to Kane’s defense and state that the onslaught of negativity was racially motivated:
Remember that restaurant bill Kane skipped out on? Or the name of the bar he got knocked out in? Of course you don’t. That’s because it changes each and every time the story is told. The amount of “I heard from my brothers, girlfriends, uncle” telephone being played regarding Kane’s personal life has reached purple monkey dishwasher levels.
And the fact it keeps coming back to Evander Kane might have something to do with his race.
Kane will be featured in the cover story of the March edition of The Hockey News along side Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane. The focus of the story is the controversial off-ice incidents that the players have experienced thus far in their young careers.
