The Vancouver Canucks have placed forward Manny Malhotra on injured reserve and announced that he will miss the remainder of the 2013 season.

The team released a statement from general manager Mike Gillis on Thursday afternoon, which explained that Malhotra’s long-term health is the most important thing in the organization’s mind. Discussing his support for the community, Gillis explained that Malhotra will continue to be a valued member of the franchise.

The release did not specify why Malhotra was being placed on injured reserve.

However, speculation has surrounded an eye injury he suffered during a 2011 game against the Colorado Avalanche. Since sustaining the injury, Malhotra's performance has declined as has his average ice-time per season.

Bob McKenzie of TSN does not believe Malhotra is ready to retire and thinks he might continue to assist the club as an assistant coach.

Malhotra joined the Canucks in July of 2010 when he signed a three-year, $7.5 million deal with the club.

At 32-years-old, Malhotra has played in 864 career games and registered 108 goals, 170 assists and 278 points.
