The Washington Capitals have extended the contract of defenseman John Erskine on Monday afternoon, according to a post on the team's official twitter account.

The Washington Capitals have extended the contract of defenseman John Erskine.

Erskine was playing in the final year of a two-year, $3 million contract, which carried an annual average value of $1.5 million. Instead of becoming an unrestricted-free agent at the conclusion of the season, Erskine has agreed to a two-year deal with the Capitals, which will carry an AAV of $1.95 million. The new deal will pay Erskine $1.9 million in the first year and $2 million in the second year.
The contract will end at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season.
Originally chosen with the No. 39 overall selection in the 1998 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars, Erskine signed with the Capitals as a free agent in 2006. In 424 career regular season games in the NHL, Erskine has compiled 11 goals, 33 assists, 44 points and 775 penalty minutes.
The announcement of his extension comes on the heels of the club announcing a two-year extension with pending-restricted free agent goaltender Braden Holtby earlier on Monday.
