The Edmonton Oilers have placed goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin on injured reserve due to a groin issue, according to an announcement on the team's official twitter page by general manager Steve Tambellini on Wednesday.

Head coach Ralph Kreuger stated after Wednesday's practice that Khabibulin tweaked the area during the final penalty shot in the team's game against the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday and then re-injured in during overtime against the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday.

The Oilers are set to begin an eight-game road trip on Thursday and Kreuger said that Khabibulin might be able to rejoin the team during the course of the trip.

With the 40-year-old netminder on injured reserve, Tambellini announced that Yann Danis has been recalled from the club's American Hockey League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons.
