Philadelphia Flyers forward Harry Zolnierczyk connected on a punishing hit against Mathieu Perreault on Wednesday night. Is it suspension worthy?

Besides the hit coming late in a game that was already way out of reach (and in Philadelphia’s favor, at that), debate has ensued about the legality of Zolnierczyk’s hit. The referees gave Zolnierczyk a five-minute major for kneeing, as well as a game misconduct.
Whether the NHL’s Department of Player Safety will get involved remains to be seen.
The play shares similarities with the hit that resulted in a two-game suspension for Edmonton Oilers forward Taylor Hall. Hall led with his knee when connecting on a neutral zone hit against Minnesota Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck.
When viewing the plays consecutively, Hall’s knee appears to be more prominent in his check and Zolnierczyk does appear to attempt to lead with his shoulder more so than Hall did. However, his knee does appear to make contact with Perreault and the Department of Player Safety has emphasized a player’s responsibility when executing hits.
