New York Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to Feb. 3 due to a groin and abdominal strain, according to an announcement on the team's official website on Monday afternoon.

The New York Islanders have placed defenseman Radek Martinek on injured reserve on Monday afternoon retroactive to Feb. 3. He has yet to play in a game with the team this season.

Martinek attended the team’s practice on Monday morning but did not participate in any on-ice activity.
According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, Martinek was going to undergo an MRI on Monday morning in order to examine the extent of the injury. He believed that Martinek was going to be placed on injured reserve in order to make room on the roster for forward Josh Bailey who has been suspended due to an injury he sustained during the lockout.
Bailey is expected to return to the starting lineup sometime this week.
Martinek signed a one-year contract worth $750,000 with the Islanders on Jan. 13. He has yet to appear in a game with the team this season.
