PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Flyers (5-6-1) defeated the Carolina Hurricanes (5-4-1) in overtime on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 4-3.

Forward Danny Briere registered the game-winning goal a little under two minutes into the extra stanza to give the Flyers their third win in four games.
The victory marked the final game of a four-game homestand, which saw the team register at least one point in each game. Following a disappointing 2-6-0 start to the season, their 3-0-1 performance on the stand was a much needed boost.
It also marks the second time Philadelphia has defeated Carolina this week.
While the end result was in the Flyers’ favor, the game opened on a sour note.
Carolina managed to open the scoring 17 seconds into the contest when Jiri Tlusty registered his first goal of the season. Philadelphia managed to strike back later in the frame when Brayden Schenn pulled the game even at one.
In the second period, the Flyers managed to score two goals starting with Matt Read who opened the period with his second goal in as many games.
Jakub Voracek would add his third goal of the season almost immediately after Jeff Skinner answered Read's strike near the mid-way mark of the frame.
With the Hurricanes trailing 3-2 in the third period, defenseman Joe Corvo tied the game following an extended offensive zone set-up by the team. Despite the effort, the team failed to re-gain the lead after allowing the Flyers to tie the game in the first.
Philadelphia goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov (5-5-1; .921 save percentage and 2.27 GAA) registered 30 saves on 33 shots, while his counterpart, Cam Ward(3-3-1; .905 save percentage and 3.28 GAA), stopped 28-of-32 shots faced.
Schenn finished the day with three points (goal and two assists), Voracek finished with two points (goal and assist) and Bryzgalov recorded his second assist of the season.
Corvo finished the game with two points (goal and assist), while both Eric and Jordan Staal recorded assists.
Philadelphia will return to action on Monday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. It will be the first game of a six-game road trip that will include stops in Winnipeg, New Jersey, Montreal, New York (Islanders) and Pittsburgh.
Carolina will also return to action on Monday night when they visit the Islanders. It will be the fifth game of a six-game road-trip, which has seen the team register a 2-1-1 record to this point.
