The Chicago Blackhawks have placed defenseman Steve Montador on waivers, according to Darren Dreger of TSN on Monday afternoon.

Defenseman Steve Montador has been placed on waivers by the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday. It appears to be an attempt to assign him to the AHL.

Montador will be open to every team in the NHL until Tuesday at noon. If Montador isn’t claimed by another club, Chicago will retain his rights and could potentially assign him to the club’s American Hockey league affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs.
Montador has yet to play a game this season and has played in one game since suffering a concussion on Feb. 7, 2012. When head coach Joel Quenneville was asked about Montador’s status, he merely stated that he was waiting for his turn to crack the lineup.
The coach declined comment when the possibility of a conditioning stint in Rockford was discussed. According to Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times, Montador stated on Friday that it had been discussed but no final decisions had been made.
Montador is in the second year of a four-year, $11 million contract, which carries an annual average value of $2.75 million against the salary cap.
