Chris Kunitz scores hat trick on sock monkey give away night

Chris Kunitz scored a hat trick on Sunday night. It was celebrated with sock monkeys being thrown onto the ice.

Last week, Los Angeles Kings forward Jeff Carter accomplished one of the greatest feats in sport when he registered a hat trick on hat giveaway night.

This led us to compile some of the other instances when players have managed to light the lamp three times while everyone in attendance received a free hat (in some cases, a free hard hat, which seems really dangerous in the event of a hat trick).

On Monday night, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Chris Kunitz carried on the tradition of his line-mate Sidney Crosby by scoring a hat trick on a giveaway night. Crosby has given Penguins' fans the opportunity to litter the ice with free hats and free bags.

Kunitz managed to do Crosby one better by scoring a hat trick on free sock monkey giveaway night.

Why the Penguins decided to giveaway free sock monkeys? Who knows. But after Kunitz scored his third goal in the second period against the New York Islanders on Sunday night, these weird little monkeys ended up all over Consol Energy Center’s ice.

In addition to the hat trick, Kunitz finished the night with two assists for a total of five points.
