Tom Poti injury: Capitals defense takes another hit

The Washington Capitals announced that Tom Poti is listed as day-to-day, while John Erskine has been placed on injured reserve.

USA TODAY Sports

Washington Capitals defenseman Tom Poti is considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury, according to an announcement by the team on Tuesday morning.

This development is another hit to the Capitals defense corps, as John Erskine was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury sustained against the New York Islanders on Saturday. The team is hopeful that Erskine will be available to return against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday.

The Capitals placed Erskine on injured reserve in order to create a roster spot for American Hockey League call-up Cameron Schilling, which the team announced on Tuesday morning. Schilling will replace Poti in the lineup, who was originally replacing Erskine.

It is believed that Schilling will skate on the third defense pairing with Steve Oleksy. Karl Alzener is expected to be paired with Tomas Kundratek, while Jeff Schultz will play with John Carlson, according to Steve Whyno of the Washington Times.

Washington will host the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night.
