Montreal Canadiens forward prospect Blake Geoffrion has announced that he will be retiring from professional hockey at the age of 25 due to head-related issues, according to John Buccigross of ESPN on Wednesday afternoon.

Blake Geoffrion has decided to retire from professional hockey at the age of 25.

Geoffrion’s head hit the ice after sustaining a punishing check in an American Hockey League game back in November of 2012, which resulted in a depressed skull fracture. Despite his ability to leave the playing surface under his own power, Geoffrion required surgery to repair the area.
As of last month, Geoffrion remained committed to returning to professional hockey. Stating that he was doing everything he could to get back, Geoffrion expressed his love for the game and his excitement about the potential of playing again.
Unfortunately, he won’t be playing again at the professional level.
However, he understands that the future quality of his life isn’t something to put at risk, via Buccigross’ Twitter:
“I love the game of hockey more than anything and this decision tears me up inside but we are talking about my brain.”
