Prior to last night’s games, we presented five burning questions regarding the night’s action. Here are your cool, soothing answers.
1. Will the Philadelphia Flyers defeat the New Jersey Devils?
The Flyers won, but they really would have preferred not giving up a point to New Jersey, who they're chasing in the standings. Really the only reason the Flyers got any points out of this game was was Ilya Bryzgalov's performance in net. He stopped 27 shots and made a few dazzling saves. He was huge when his team needed him to be, but his team wasn't able to pull their own weight.
2. Will the Flyers’ best players ... be their best players?
Claude Giroux had four shots but no points. He did score in the shootout, so there is that. Danny Briere also had four shots and no points. Brayden Schenn might get suspended for a really dumb charging penalty on Peter Harrold. So other than Bryzgalov? No.
3. Will the Detroit Red Wings rebound against the Edmonton Oilers?
For awhile, it didn’t look like they would. But they came out with a strong third period and completely outskated the Oilers to take the game to overtime. Give them credit for not giving up and capitalizing on Oilers mistakes to win this one in OT.
4. Can the Oilers compile their first three-game winning streak of the season?
I think this is a sign of a young team. Veteran teams know how to play consistently and string together good performances. That’s why this three-game win streak has eluded the Oilers all season long. Edmonton played well for two periods but couldn’t hold tight in the third, and it cost them.
5. Will the Nashville Predators score more than four goals against the Flames?
I mean, they came close. I’ll give them credit for that. But their third goal came in the hockey equivalent of garbage time, when the Flames had taken a 5-2 lead with two minutes and change left in the game. But they can’t keep playing the “come-from-behind” game because they’re second worst in the NHL when it comes to goals-per-game. It’s just not their game, and they proved it again last night.

The moment that got people talking happened off the ice, as the Phoenix Coyotes locked up Oliver Ekman-Larsson to a six-year, $33 million deal.
Pekka Rinne in the last two days: 6 goals allowed on 14 shots. 3.00 GAA. 0.571 SV%. All in 35:32 TOI. Brutal.
