The Toronto Maple Leafs placed defenseman Mike Komisarek on waivers, according to multiple reports on Wednesday afternoon.

Mike Komisarek has been placed on waivers by the Toronto Maple Leafs, as has Zach Boychuk by the Nashville Predators.

The intention is for Komisarek to clear waivers so that he can be assigned to the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. The 31-year-old defenseman has played in only four games this season, averaging 15:20 of ice-time over the span of those contests. He is currently in the fourth year of a five-year, $22.5 million contract that carries an annual average value of $4.5 million against the salary cap.
Due to his being a healthy scratch for the majority of the year, Komisarek conceded his no-movement clause in order to be waived.
This decision comes a day removed from the Maple Leafs assigning defenseman Korbinian Holzer to the Marlies in order to create a roster spot for 22-year-old defenseman Jake Gardiner.
In addition to Komisarek, the Nashville Predators placed forward Zach Boychuk on waivers. This is the third time Boychuk has been placed on waivers this season, as the Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins had previously taken the same course of action.
Originally selected with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft by Carolina, the 23-year-old has accumulated eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 85 career NHL regular-season games.
