NHL schedule & starting goalies: Red Wings, Ducks highlight lazy Sunday

The NHL has just a handful of games on the schedule for Sunday but features a big matchup between the Detroit Red Wings and the Ducks tonight in Anaheim.

USA TODAY Sports

A relatively light day in the NHL on Sunday, with no games on NBC in the afternoon and just one game broadcast on national television.

The Panthers and Islanders kick off the day’s festivities in a battle between two struggling teams, before the games with a direct effect on the playoff hunt begin.

The Capitals travel to New York to take on the Rangers as both teams attempt to overcome incredibly disappointing seasons so far in a battle for the final playoff spot int he East. The Flyers, likely down and out in their fight for the postseason, will take on the first-place Pittsburgh Penguins in a game still likely to incur some fierce competition between the rivals.

The night concludes with a big game between the Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings, with the Wings needing a win to build a further lead in the standings over those fighting for the No. 8 spot in the West.
