Bruins vs. Capitals: Ovechkin hook leads to Marchand penalty shot goal

A series of unfortunate events for the Capitals led to an early goal on a penalty shot for the Boston Bruins.

USA TODAY Sports

After Washington defenseman John Carlson misplayed the puck and fell down during a Capitals powerplay and allowed Boston's Brad Marchand to streak towards the net on a breakaway, Alex Ovechkin had no real choice but to try to stop him any way he could. Unfortunately for the Capitals, Ovechkin's combination of slashes and hooks was enough for the officials to award a penalty shot to Marchand, and he managed to put the puck past Braden Holtby to give Boston a 1-0 lead early in the first period.

Brad Marchand had a good chance of scoring here, whether it was on a breakaway or the penalty shot. He came into Tuesday night leading the Bruins in goals with eleven.
