Brad Richards injury: Rangers forward addresses concussion concerns

Brad Richards will not be available for Thursday night’s game against the New York Islanders.

USA TODAY Sports

New York Rangers forward Brad Richards will miss his second consecutive game on Thursday night due to issues stemming from the hit received from Buffalo Sabres' forward Patrick Kaleta on Sunday afternoon.

Richards was unable to participate in practice on Thursday morning but was present for media availability. During that time, Richards explained that he did not sustain a concussion on the play and that his injuries will not force him to miss an extended period of time.

However, he explained that his head and neck feel locked up, and he is waiting for the soreness to subside prior to returning to regular activity.

As of Thursday morning, there was no time-table for a return.

Richards sustained his injuries after Kaleta hit him from behind into the boards. Kaleta received a five-game suspension for the play. While Richards was able to finish the game, he was unable to play against the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night.

On Thursday, Richards expressed his frustration with the incident, via the Bergen Record:

“I just hope that someone doesn’t have to have a broken neck and get carried off on a stretcher for that to sink in that it’s just a crazy play. We learn that in Pee Wee: If you see somebody’s number, you just don’t do that. Hopefully something worse doesn’t have to happen where we have to make a point on that.”
