NHL trade deadline: Mike Ribeiro, Capitals to resume talks this week

The Capitals are expected to resume contract negotiations with Mike Ribeiro’s representation this week.

The Washington Capitals are expected to continue discussions with the representation of forward Mike Ribeiro, according to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN on Monday morning.

LeBrun reports that Ribeiro’s agent, Don Meehan, spoke with the organization on Friday and was expected to speak to them again on Monday or Tuesday. Ribeiro is playing in the final year of a five-year, $25 million contract that carries an annual average value of $5 million against the salary cap. He will be an unrestricted free agent in July.

Ribeiro has publicly stated his interest in re-signing with the Capitals. He stated last week that he was looking for a long-term contract and expressed a desire for another five-year deal. He explained that he views anything short of a four-year deal to be a short-term contract. With that in mind, Ribeiro rejected a three-year offer from the Capitals on Friday, according to Renaud Lavoie of RDS.

If Ribeiro becomes an unrestricted free agent, he is expected to receive considerable interest. This has led some to believe that Washington will look to move him in the event an extension can’t be arranged. He has a limited no-trade clause, which allows him to denote 10 teams he is unwilling to play for.

In 35 games this season, Ribeiro has accumulated 11 goals and 24 assists for 35 points.
