Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek discusses his future with the franchise.

With the NHL trade deadline rapidly approaching, many believe the floundering Buffalo franchise will look to sell some of its valuable pieces. Players such as captain Jason Pominville, goaltender Ryan Miller and Vanek have been mentioned as potentially being available.
Vanek is currently playing in the sixth year of a seven-year, $50 million contract that carries an annual average value of $7.1 million against the salary cap. Set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season, Vanek understands the organization might look to move him.
While he expressed an interest to stay in Buffalo, he couldn’t definitively say he would want to be apart of another rebuilding project. In fact, he insinuates that he likely wouldn’t stay if the restructuring of the franchise extends beyond one-year, via The Buffalo News:
“I’m sure nobody likes to call their team a rebuilding team, but if that’s the phase, if it’s one year that’s OK, but if it’s a two-, three-year plan again, you would probably look the other direction.”
